Monroe County Highway Department

The Monroe County Highway Department (MCHD) maintains 760 miles of roadway throughout the County’s 635 square miles (6th largest of Tennessee’s 95 counties). Road types range from those like “Old Highway 68” with an average daily traffic count exceeding 2,000 to the much smaller but no less important roads serving our communities and neighborhoods.

MCHD is also responsible for maintaining signs on all County roads and for mowing and ditching to maintain usable rights of way and safe shoulders. Snow removal on County roads and clearing debris during and after increment weather are also parts of the Highway Department’s responsibility.

In addition to the above, MCHD maintains its own fleet of service vehicles, and all of the vehicles operated by EMS, Solid Waste, and all “County General” departments.

So, whether clearing a roadway for the transport of patients to local medical facilities, young people to our schools, or shoppers and workers to local businesses, the Monroe County Highway Department team is pleased to serve all businesses, residents and visitors of Monroe County.
